Q. I have the C.J.F. and or the Dip. W.C.F. can I buy the Canadian credential, Approved Journeyman Farrier of Canada?

A. Yes you can. Submit your case studies and $500 and be a current member of one of the supporting regional farrier associations.

Q. What do I need to do to be a recognized training farrier for my apprentice?

A. You need to have at least one of the following.

A.F.A. C.J.F.

Dip. W.C.F.

Record of successful competing at national level exams, or membership of a national farrier team.

And a letter of support from a current apprentice and/or past apprentice.

And a brief resume outlining previous experience training farriers, type of business and work facilities available for training.

And a current criminal record check.

Q. To do the final exam to get the Approved Journeyman Farrier of Canada, AJFC, what do I need to do?

Q. I’m not sure exactly what I need to do to prepare for the exams. Will there be examples of exam questions anywhere? And examples of the other parts of the exams?

A. Visit the Study Guide on our RESOURCES page, and view the EXAM CHECKLIST there and in your MY ACCOUNT.  There is also a Youtube link on the RESOURCES page for your review.

Q. I’d like to be in the apprentice program but I’ve already spent two years working as a helper. Can I apply to be admitted as a second or third year apprentice?

A. At this time you can do that. You decide what level you think you are at. Then arrange to try one of the exams for the end of the year before. If you pass that exam you will be accepted as an apprentice at that level. If you fail that exam you would attempt the lower level and if successful be accepted there.

Q. Will the A.F.T.C./A.M.F.C. find me a suitable training farrier? I don’t know any?

A. The association will not find you a training farrier but we can supply a list of potential farriers. If you find someone willing to be your training farrier they will need to apply to the association to be recognized as a training farrier.

Q. I’d like to challenge the final exam, can I do that without going through the apprenticeship program?

A. Yes, at this time anyone can challenge the final exam, if you can prove a minimum of three years fulltime employment in the trade. If successful they will be given the credential.

Q. Is this program and credential going to be compulsory for farriers in Canada?

A. No, this is a voluntary program. The goal is to provide a more organized path for farriers to become more skilled and prepared to be as successful as possible.

Q. Is there any government assistance since it’s an apprentice program? I’ve heard both federal and provincial governments give money to apprentices.

A. After the program has been established and shown to be reaching it’s goals then there may be support from governments. Currently there is no financial support from any level of government. Right now the only support is from regional farrier associations in Canada.

Q. Do I have to pay a membership to join the association?

A. To be an apprentice or training farrier you need to be a paid up member of one of the supporting regional farrier associations. Being a member of a supporting regional association automatically makes you a member of the training association. Currently those associations are, the Atlantic Farriers Association, the Quebec Farriers Association, the Ontario Farriers Association, the Western Canadian Farriers Association.

Q. J’aimerais être dans le programme d’apprentissage, mais j’ai déjà passé deux ans à travailler comme aide. Puis-je postuler pour être admis en tant qu’apprenti de deuxième ou de troisième année ?
A. Pour le moment, vous pouvez le faire. Vous décidez à quel niveau vous pensez être. Ensuite, arrangez-vous pour essayer l’un des examens de fin d’année précédente. Si vous réussissez cet examen, vous serez accepté comme apprenti à ce niveau. Si vous échouez à cet examen, vous tenterez le niveau inférieur et si vous réussissez, vous y serez accepté.

Q. Est-ce que l’A.F.T.C./A.M.F.C. peut me trouver un maréchal-ferrant de formation approprié si je n’en connais pas ?
A. L’association ne vous trouvera pas de maréchal-ferrant de formation mais nous pouvons vous fournir une liste de maréchaux potentiels. Si vous trouvez quelqu’un prêt à être votre maréchal-ferrant de formation, il devra faire une demande auprès de l’association pour être reconnu comme maréchal-ferrant de formation.

Q. Je voudrais passer l’examen final, puis-je le faire sans passer par le programme d’apprentissage ?
A. Oui, à l’heure actuelle, n’importe qui peut passer l’examen final, si vous pouvez prouver un minimum de trois ans d’emploi à temps plein dans le métier. En cas de succès, ils recevront les informations d’identification.

Q. Ce programme et ce titre vont-ils être obligatoires pour les maréchaux-ferrants au Canada ?
A. Non, il s’agit d’un programme volontaire. L’objectif est de fournir aux maréchaux-ferrants un parcours plus organisé pour qu’ils deviennent plus qualifiés et se préparent à réussir le mieux possible.

Q. Y a-t-il une aide gouvernementale puisqu’il s’agit d’un programme d’apprentissage ? J’ai entendu dire que les gouvernements fédéral et provinciaux donnaient de l’argent aux apprentis.
A. Une fois que le programme a été établi et qu’il a démontré qu’il a atteint ses objectifs, il peut y avoir un soutien des gouvernements. À l’heure actuelle, il n’y a aucun soutien financier d’aucun palier de gouvernement. Le seul soutien provient des associations régionales de maréchaux-ferrants au Canada.

Q. Dois-je payer une adhésion pour rejoindre l’association ?
A. Pour être un apprenti ou un maréchal-ferrant en formation, vous devez être un membre cotisant de l’une des associations régionales de maréchal-ferrant. Être membre d’une association régionale de soutien fait automatiquement de vous un membre de l’association de formation.
